Vista House at Crown Point

One of the most photographed and recognizable sites in the Columbia River Gorge. Follow the Columbia River Scenic east from Lewis and Clark State Park. Information: (503) 695-2230.

Visit Tasagaglalal, "She Who Watches”

Horsethief Lake State Park contains one of the most famous Native American pictographs in the Pacific Northwest : Tasagaglalal, "She Who Watches."

Visitors are permitted at the pictograph site only as part of a guided tour. These are regularly scheduled only on Fridays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., April through October.

Multnomah Falls

Plummeting 620 feet from its origins on Larch Mountain, Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the nation.

At the base of the falls lays historic Multnomah Falls Lodge. Built in 1925 the lodge provides fine northwest cuisine with a panoramic view from your table.

Guler Ice Caves

These lava tubes served as a source of ice for chilled drinks in frontier times. Today it is a perfect way to cool down on those sweltering summer days. Located in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest west of Trout Lake of Washington Highway 141. Information: (509) 395-3400.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge overlooks the Columbia River from a 600-foot bluff. Located east of Maryhill Museum on Washington Highway 14.

Goldendale Observatory

The Goldendale Observatory State Park houses one of the nation's largest public telescopes. On a hilltop just north of town, the park offers views of Mt, Hood and the Klickitat Valley in daylight, but the best views are during Goldendale's clear night skies, You can see the moon, planets, stars and galaxies through an assortment of telescopes, the main attraction being a 24 1/2" reflecting Cassegrain, The Observatory is open year round with seasonal schedules for demonstrations and viewing, or by appointment. Located in Goldendale off Washington Highway 97.

John Day Fossil Beds

The John Day Fossil Beds contain great numbers of well-preserved "fossils of remarkable diversity, spanning over 40 million years. Its hours vary, throughout the year. (541) 987-2333

Lost Lake

There are several trails worth exploring in the lost lake area. The lake shore trail is an easy 3.2 mile hike around the lake – including a remarkable half mile boardwalk through old-growth cedars. For a quarter, you can get a guide book at the General Store where the numbers on the trail posts correspond to the numbers in the trail book.

There is also a 2 mile hike to Lost Lake Butte. Snow-free: May - October.

From I-84, take West Hood River exit 62, drive into town, turn right on 13th Street, follow signs toward Odell for 3.4 miles, then just after you cross a small bridge, keep right going past Tucker Park. Go another 6.3 miles and veer right towards Dee, then follow signs another 14 miles to Lost Lake. Go past the entry booth following signs to the General Store to the Picnic Area parking lot.

Oneonta Gorge
While often overlooked, this trail is definitely worth exploring. The trial takes you to a cavern behind Ponytail Falls. Ponytail Falls was created by a lava flow that also buried a layer of soft soil. The falls washed out the underlying soil, creating the cavern. Beyond the falls, the trail loops around Oneonta Gorge, a narrow mossy ravine filled with knee to waist deep water. The best way to see the Oneonta Gorge is to wade up the creek from the highway bridge. This is best explored on a hot summer day, when the water isn’t too deep or too cold.

To get there take I-84 east of Portland to Ainsworth Park exit 35, turn right and follow the old scenic highway 1.5 miles back to Horsetail Falls Trailhead parking area. The trail starts beside 176-foot Horsetail Falls.

This museum is one of the best exhibits of home life and family customs from the 1880-1930 era, featuring farm equipment, pioneer furnishings, tools and artifacts. Special collections include antique camera equipment, coffee mills, branding irons, Indian artifacts, miscellaneous craft items and tools, plus a home- stead cabin in the attic. Watch for the annual holiday open house, with a Christmas lighting display on Dec. 2, 2001 . The museum is located at 127 W Broadway (Washington Highway 142), just north of downtown Goldendale.
